What is MELANIN?

For starters, Melanin is a broad term that describes the natural pigment found in most organisms. In humans, it can be found in our hair, eyes, skin, and even our brains, Oh My! There are many types of melanin, the most common types are Eumelanin which is the most common type and is brownish in color; Phenomelanin which creates a reddish-brown color and is the reason behind freckles and red hair; and Nueromelanin which is found in the brain and to this day its function is unknown, ooo creepy. We all have melanin, as well as the, came number of melanin cells, but our pigment is determined by the size of these cells. All melanin plays a protective role in our bodies. When it comes to darker skin complexions it helps protect our skin from UV rays which keeps us from burning as easily in the sun. Melanin also protects darker complexions from most skin diseases like skin cancer. But beware, that doesn't these complexions impervious to the sun. These melanin powers have their consequences. The surface of your skin is still absorbing sun rays, just at a slower rate, but regardless the effects can be significant and make skin more sensitive. Ever heard of dark marks? The deeper your complexion, the more apparent these skin discolorations become. Dark marks are a type of skin hyperpigmentation that can become darker when left in the sun longer.  This can prolong their stay on your skin and make getting rid of them that much harder.
